The Ammonia Economy

The Ammonia Economy The Ammonia Economy The Ammonia Economy It was suggested by President Bush in his State of the Union message that hydrogen be employed by society as the fuel to meet our future energy needs. I reacted to this suggestion with a degree of alarm.Putting aside for the present the dangers in handling and using hydrogen in energy devices, the development of such a project is very expensive and would come to fruition about a generation hence. An alternate solution that is immediately available employs ammonia in internal combustion engine technology. There are no large development costs, and the price of the resulting vehicle is not significantly increased. In addition, the fuel, i.e., ammonia, is presently abundant and the fuel handling technology already exists and is user-friendly.About 40 years ago, I was a project leader on an Army research contract to produce fuel from air and water suitable to be used immediately in Army vehicles and devices. The family of fuels t hat could be produced were those that contained hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, e.g., hydrogen, ammonia, hydrazine.Hydrogen and hydrazine were ruled out.Storage and handling technologies for these fuels were not adequately developed. Of more importance, the combustion properties of these fuels put the non-technical layman in harms way.The advantages of using hydrogen are that it burns well in energy devices has very wide limits of flammability, making for stable combustion and has a large heat of combustion per unit mass. There are also disadvantages to hydrogen. It detonates very easily. When used in diesel engines, it needs to be compressed for injection into the cylinder. But doing so can consume up to 15 percent of its output power, thus compromising its efficiency. At low pressure, its heat of combustion is low per unit volume. Although Honda has introduced a hydrogen-powered car employing a fuel cell that offers many advantages, and Toyota and others will soon follow suit, in t he immediate future hydrogen will not be readily available at the corner fuel station. The present fueling procedure is complicated for the average layman. The dangers of fuel spills leading to combustion and/or possible detonation are still prevalent. Vehicle collision and subsequent fires and possible detonation are another danger, particularly when gaseous hydrogen is contained at high pressure, as has been recommended by some.A Universal Fuel?On the other hand, ammonia-based fuels offer a great potential for universal use. The present disadvantage is that pure ammonia is not suitable for use in high-speed engines. Its flame speed is too low. However, ammonia can be doped by environmentally friendly chemical additives, and thus be compatible in high-speed engines. Ammonia is already compatible in other energy devices, such as low-speed engines and fuel cells. It is an abundantly produced chemical used in industry and agriculture. Production facilities can easily be expanded. There a re environmental impacts in its production, largely energy costs for production of the hydrogen needed to make ammonia. These effects can be ameliorated by careful evaluation and selection of sources of hydrogen and energy to produce it. In addition, handling and storage technologies are presently available and can readily be transferred to the general population.Present-day engines and energy devices are slanted toward operational compatibility with the combustion properties of the fossil fuel. This operational compatibility need not be compromised. At the present time, technology exists in which an emulsificant can be used as a component in a fossil fuel, so that the ignition properties of the emulsion are not altered. Ammonia can gradually be introduced as the emulsificant.Ammoniated fuel will power an engine or burner with very little modification. Thus, the transition to an ammonia-based fuel economy can be as slow or as fast as societal conditions permit. In summary, there are many advantages to be achieved by adopting this alternate fuel technology of an ammonia-based fuel. Its application can be immediate. Our dependence on fossil fuels will be lessened, engines and burners will operate with cleaner burn at higher efficiencies, and environmentally friendly liquids such as ammonia, water, alcohols, or waste liquids can be used as emulsificants in a broad range of proportions. In addition, waste storage areas, e.g., those at industrial sites and farms, can be cleaned. Finally, with the introduction of this technology, society can function as before with its normal patterns of behavior, and without being put into harms way.Ammonia is already compatible in other energy devices, such as low-speed engines and fuel cells.

Im not fierce Confessions of a confidence coach

Im elend fierce Confessions of a confidence coachIm not fierce Confessions of a confidence coachI like to own the stage. I channel my inner showman and turn on the razzle-dazzle. Im often really just one jazz-hand number away from selling tickets. And, inevitably, whether in a public arena where Im keynoting about leadership and confidence or in a quiet coffee meeting doling out some mentoring advice, that stage persona always leads to the same question. When did you become so fierce?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreTo be fair, Im not always called fierce. Sometimes, its bold. Other times, its strong. Most often, its variations on daring or brave or confident. But, heres my dirty little secret Im none of these things, and Im especially not fierce. But, I know how to play fierce on TV.So, whats the difference? You see, fierce is not my fundamental state. Dont get me wrong I am THE f riend you want in the foxhole. As a team member of mine, I will fight for and with you as if you were my own flesh and blood. But, fierce connotes a level of confidence that the flesh-covered bag of insecurities I call my psyche does not even remotely recognize. I was never that girl growing up, and vestiges of that social awkwardness and self-doubt leise feel relatively close to the surface to me. And therein lies the difference between perception and reality.Confidence Perception Versus RealityThere is a funny thing about confidence sometimes the people who look like they have the most actually have the least. And, none of it matters. It is an unrepentant truism that everyone around you rates your level of organized fierceness not through the lens of your reality, but through the lens of their own. We perceive others to be better than us simply because our lives are not all they can be. We judge our bloopers by everyone elses highlight reelsFor me, its not confidence that has fuele d my success, but optimism, romanticism, idealism. What most people see as confidence is just those things disguised as forward motion, action, and determination.Competence Leads to ConfidenceYou see, Im a hopeless optimist, a romancer of dreams, and an idealist extraordinaire. Its not that I do big things because I am certain that I am someone who can. I do big things because I desperately want to imagine that I am someone who has. I can visualize the finish line, taste the victory, savor the success, feel the crown atop my head, but I truly have no idea whether or not Im going to fail miserably at the start. If I waited until I believed I could do anything for certain, the only thing I would do for certain is nothing at all.It goes against every central tenet of every confidence coach youve ever heard, I know. They all say, Believe that you can, and then you will I think thats bunk. Sure, there is a role for visualization - see my romantic visions of, well, everything in life - but Id rather have you just do the thing whether you believe it or not.Its not Dream then do but Do then dream It is through doing it, that you start believing it. Sometimes it just takes one foot in front of the other, over and over, lather, rinse, repeat, to strip away your self-doubts and remind you of whats inside. It is through the doing the demonstration of competence that you will find your confidence.Embracing FailureBe forewarned along this path lies certain failure. But, failure isnt the finale, its a fulcrum. Unless you fake it til ya make it, in which case, it only leads nowhere. The fear of failure limits our ability to get ourselves right, to determine who we are when we are at our very best- to groove the pattern as a leader when we are that best self. But, if we try to prevent failure by acting like we know what were doing, we will groove that pattern instead of acting like we know what we are doing. You may think that if you keep faking it, you can never fail. But t his setup builds a house on a false foundation of confidence that isnt based on competence. It forces you to speak using other peoples voices and to act using other peoples mannerisms. You try to control for everything and end up controlling nothing. Rather than holding more tightly to the reins, you need to allow space for trying out new things, for failure and feedback.A Magic ShortcutOf course, that all takes time. And how to do we get bold, get fierce, get confident while we are working hard to develop that competence? Turn the lens onto others. If Ive learned one thing along the way, its this making others great makes you great. When people approach you with certainty that you are more amazing than you might believe, rather than deflect, demur, deconstruct, tell them something about them that makes them special. Simply put if someone thinks you are great, and you tell them they are great, they will become great. Greatness compounds. So, you want to become more bold, fierce, more confident as you develop your own competence? Go make people great.Laura Gassner Otting is the author of Limitless How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life. Want to live a limitless life? Education and Experience Don#8217;t Guarantee Success  Attitude and Habits Do

Education and Experience Don8217t Guarantee Success Attitude and Habits Do Education and Experience Don8217t Guarantee Success Attitude and Habits Do Professional success is the culmination of many factors. Your education matters maybe not as much as you think, but a degree in your field can really jump-start your progress. Your experience certainly matters, but that can only come to you after years of dedication. Your talent matters, too, but aside from skills (which develop from experience), most of your talent is innate, meaning you have a natural tendency to perform well in certain areas more than in others. Your network of contacts matters, but you cant always control who you interact with. And ultimately, at least some of your career success is going to come down to a factor of luck.Looking at these things, it may seemlike there is little you can control when it comes to professional success. But thats not true. In fact, none of these things will matter if you neglect the mo st important factors of success and these are all thingsyou need to createfor yourself1. A Positive AttitudeThe whole positive attitude angle might seem like a gimmick after all, can you think of anybody successful who got to where they are only because they thought positive thoughts? Of course not. But you can trace almost any successful entrepreneur or professionals journey and find at least one major obstacle that nearly disrupted everything. In the face of that obstacle, these people remained positive, which motivated action rather than submission, and eventually, they rose to the top.Positive thinking is about more than helping yourself through the tough times. Research shows thatpositive self-talk, rather than negative self-talk, can actively reduce your stress levels, giving you greater physical and mental health and a greater capacity to perform atyour maximum. The best part is that there arent any naturally positive or naturally negative people your thoughts and your self -talk can be controlled with practice, meaning a positive attitude is something you can, and should, create for yourself.2. Ongoing HabitsOur habits make us who we are. Over time, our repeated actions become automatic. Once were in that groove, its nearly impossible to break the chain. With bad habits like sleeping through your first alarm or working through your breaks this unbreakable chain can be a bad thing. But with positive habits like regularly reading or fact-checking all of your work this unbroken chain can lead you to success.Though many habits form unconsciously through our natural actions, it is possible to create ongoing habits for yourself. The key to creating these habits is consistency If you want to start doing something every day, you must force yourself to start doing it on a daily basis. Dont allow yourself to slip in the first few weeks. After a few rounds of consistent effort, it will become easier.Breaking bad habitscan be tougher, but its entirely within your power.3. GoalsWhile your specific job may have company goals that dictate your actions, your professional goals are entirely within your control.Create goals that are too loftyand youll never be able to make significant progress. Create goals that are too easy, and youll never reach your true potential. The reliable standby for creating good goals are the SMART criteria. SMART is an acronym that describes the five key qualities that all goals must have They must be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-specific.In addition to meeting these criteria, you should create goals on multiple scales. For example, you should have broad, flexible long-term goals detailing your plans for your long-term success, but you should also have smaller, more immediate goals that can lead you to those broader visions and medium-sized goals in between the two to act as milestones.4. Tactical PlansGoals are good for helping you to hone your desires and set the tone for your career, but without a solid plan of execution, those desires are only pipe dreams. As an extension of your goals, you must learn to create tactical plans that detailhow youre going to achieve those goals. That might include a list of tasks you must accomplish before reaching the goal, a series of strategies youre going to use while pursuing that goal, or a list of prerequisites youll need to have before moving on to the next phase of your plan. If youre having trouble coming up with an initial plan, you may need to do additional research before moving forward.5. A Healthy EnvironmentAs humans, we are often products of our environments. In the professional world, this is no different. If your desk is messy, your mind may be more frantic and cluttered. If you work in a noisy area full of distractions, youll never be able to focus.More importantly, if youre surrounded bynegative, apathetic, or downright lazy people, youll never be able to motivate yourself to achieve your goals. If youre working in a place that doesnt acknowledge hard work, youll never be able to progress.Create your own environment to maximize your chances for success, whether that means working within the confines of your current organization ormoving on to a better opportunity. Surround yourself with the types of people who will lead you to success, and structure your work environment so you can be your most productive.Once you start creating these things for yourself consistently and with dedication, you will find yourself naturally gravitating toward a path of success. With a strong vision in your mind and the right attitude and environment to carry you through the obstacles that lie ahead, there should be nothing stopping you from achieving your goals.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Larry Alton is a professional blogger, writer, and researcher who contributes to a number of reputable online media outlets and news sources, including Entrepreneur.com, HuffingtonPost.com, and Business.com, among others. Different Content Management Systems

Different Content Management SystemsDifferent Content Management SystemsA Content Management System (CMS) is a software application used to create, customize, and manage information. Most CMS can be used aloneor in conjunction (i.e., integrated) with other applications. They can be set up directly on a network, the Internet, or even locally on your own computer. The most widespread use of CMS today involves the quick creation of powerful websites that do not require a high level of programming knowledge to set up, customize, and maintain. CMS can be broken into two main types Proprietary CMS and Open Source CMS. Proprietary CMS Many companies sell licenses to use their own proprietary CMS. Proprietary generally means someone owns the rights to the CMS application and you need permission, or a license, to use it. But even if you have a license, in most cases, license holders may totenstill be prohibited from duplicating the CMS. They may also be restricted from making alterations to the application unless they purchase a developers license. Some proprietary systems are designed to work outside the environment of the creator. However, you need to know where the CMS will operate properly because many types of proprietary systems only work if the site you build with them is hosted by the CMS owner. For example, most online build it yourself website services use some form of proprietary CMS. If you build a website live through their tools the site will only work as long as you keep it with that companys CMS. If you try to move your domain somewhere else, the website you created may no longer work or may be converted to another format. Two of the biggest downsides to using a proprietary system include the cost of licenses and being limited as to where you can host your website and because many web host companies do not support proprietary CMS. This lack ofportability is the major reason most small business owners choose to use Open Source CMS. Open Source CMS The most popular Open Source CMS run on PHP (a scripting language well-suit for web development that can be embedded into HTML). These include WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal- the White House website is a Drupal site. Open source (OS) programs can be used by anyone for any purpose and do not require a license. You may also customize OS CMS without special permission. A few of the significant benefits of using an OS CMS include There are cheaper because there are no license fees or upgrade fees. There are no contracts to sign and no long-term commitments one has to make.Anyone can develop OS applications- there are already countless free modules, plugins, and complimentary tools so you dont need to hire a developer. There are hundreds of thousands of free templates (otherwise called themes) available for OS CMS.Search engines love OS CMS and WordPress, in particular, which is very simple to optimize for search engines using simple plug-in tools. They practically work right out of the bo x. Which CMS Is Best For You? Start by considering one of the three most popular Open Source applications WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal- and play with them in that order. Companies that use WordPress include Ford, People Magazine, Sony, CNN, eBay, and Wired. WordPress.Ideal for personal websites, blogs, small businesses, and those with few technical skills and no desire to learn programming skills, WordPress is the best place to start. It has the most available free themes (i.e., templates) and plugins available. Originally developed as a blogging tool, it is now used commonly to create complicated websites.Joomla.Olympus, Porsche, Sprint, and Vodafone are just a few of the major corporations that use Joomla. Joomla takes a little bit more time to set up than WordPressbut is more powerful and still easier than the mighty Drupal. It also works for blogs. Drupal. The White House switched from a proprietary CMS to Drupal. Other companies using Drupal include ATT, McDonalds, Duke and Standford Universities, Symantec, and the Linux Foundation. Drupal can be overwhelming for beginners.

Working in a Private Practice Law Firm

Working in a Private Practice Law FirmWorking in a Private Practice Law FirmAbout 75 percent of the 1.3 million-plus licensed attorneys in the U.S. work in private practice. Lawyers are considered to work in private practice when theyre part of a firm with two or more attorneys, or they have a solo practice. Lawyers employed in a law firmmight work as partners who share the firms profits and risks, or as associates- attorneys who have not yet reached full partnership status. Law firms also employ numerous other legal professionals, including legal secretaries and paralegals, law clerks, IT personnel, litigation support professionals, law firm administrators, marketing personnel, file clerks, and legal medical consultants. Legal Practice Areas Solo practitioners sometimes operate asjacks of all trades, offering legal services in a broad sortiment of practice areas. Many do focus on one particular niche or area of law, however. Legal professionals employed in larger law firms usual ly specialize in one or two specific areas. A few common legal specialties include Tax LawCriminal LawBankruptcy LawFamily LawAppellate LawLabor and EmploymentProducts LiabilityEnvironmental Law (also known as Green Law)Securities LawIntellectual Property Law Billing Time Law firm professionals are charged with the onerous task of tracking pretty much every minute of their time so the firm can bill those minutesto their clients. Law firms frequently impose high monthly and yearly billable hour requirements upon partners, associates, and paralegals, making law firm employment among the most demanding of legal practice environments. Time is typically billed in six-minute increments, so a two-minute phone call would be charged at six minutes. Time might be billed to clients on a monthly basis, but its more often charged against retainer fees paid by clients that are held on deposit by the firm. Fees for time might also be subtracted from any monetary damages the lawyer wins for the client. Law firms are notorious for requiring long work hours from their employees to raise revenues. But although 50 to 80 hour work weeks are common in some law firms, not all firms are sweatshops. Each has its own unique culture and work requirements. Work/Life Balance In some cases, the time demands placed upon law firm professionals limit their ability to pursue outside interests and family life. A survey by the Texas Bar Association found that 18 percent of respondents would exchange lower compensation for fewer hours at the office and in court, even if it affected their potential for advancement. Big Firm Vs. Small Firm According to the Lawyer Statistical Report, only 14 percent of attorneys are employed in large law firms of more than 100 lawyers. The American Bar Association puts the number at about 16 percent. The large majority of attorneys- about63 percent- and law firm employees work in smaller offices of 10 attorneys or less. Working in a law firm has its uniq ue benefits and challenges, and significant differences exist between employment in a small firm versus employment in a large firm.

When I was hired I asked for more money but was told that at the beginning of the new year, when reviews were done, I would get the normal raise as long as I had earned it. I was also told that I would receive a better title with a higher salary at review time, which would make more of a difference in pay. I accepted the job “as is,” have done a good job and recently received my regular two-percent raise. I am waiting for the meeting in which I will receive a new title, and was told during my review that my pay would be increased to be commensurate with my new title. Doing some research in preparation, I found that the position generally pays about $15K more than I was initially told I would get. While waiting for that meeting, another kicker comes into play. My co-worker moved on about four months ago, and I’ve been doing the job by myse lf since then. My new co-worker started the beginning of this month, and I just found out that he is making that same figure that I feel I should be making, which once again is $15K more than they want to pay me, and $25K more from what I’ve been making. My plan is to present the documentation from my research first as to what this title should pay, and if they balk at paying me that, to bring up the fact the my co-worker (we do basically the same job) makes that much. My question is how best to handle this situation.A: It’s always a good idea to get salary and compensation promises down on a piece of paper somewhere or in an e-mail. When it comes to fulfilling promises, even people with good intentions sometimes forget what they promised, or perhaps a new manager is coming to take the old manager’s place and your promise leaves just as your manager leaves. Your plan on presenting the documentation first as to what the title should pay and then answering objections if they bal k at that seems a little backwards.I would suggest that you bring in the research, but that you start the negotiations with your ideal. “I’m glad I have the chance to talk with you about my performance and compensation. Once we’ve gone over my performance, I would like to spend a little time telling you what I think my ideal compensation should be and then take the discussion from there.” Then when it comes time to talk money, explain what your ideal number is (see marketplace value formula in chapter five of my book) and explain your justification for that number. The number should be bigger than what they’re thinking, even bigger than what their range is. Then you can let them off the hook a little bit, so to say, and say to them “I know you probably can’t reach my ideal number even if I’m worth it, but what can we do to get closer to that number?” Then it’ll be easier for you to negotiate from the top down rather than from the bottom up.

How to Add References to a Resume

How to Add References to a Resume How to Add References to a Resume When you apply for jobs today, you need to make sure that your resume stands out among others the company receives. Adding references to your resume can help you stand out, especially as many people no longer list references on a resume. As most employers require that you submit a resume of one page or less, you need to maximize the amount of available space and highlight the skills and experience you have that applies to the job. If you have any remaining space available, you may want to draw attention to the fact that you can supply your references after receiving an interview. When Do You Add References to a Resume? Adding references to a resume today is something that you will do when you have important people willing to speak on your behalf. This may include the founder of a major corporation, the CEO of a well-known company, or the owner of a large business. Keep in mind that hiring managers and human resources directors will generally only look at the first page of your resume . If adding references to the resume takes you to a second page, leave off those names. You can always list a small notation at the bottom that you can provide references when needed. How to Add References to a Resume You may decide that you want to add references to your resume, or a job posting may require that you add two or more references to a resume. Keep things simple when adding those details. You generally need to list:the individuals full namehis or her job title within the companyan accurate phone number with extensionthe address of the company with the individuals office number listedan email addressIf the job posting does not require any information regarding your references, you do not need to list any references. Let the employer know that you can send an email with your references later.Adding References to Your ResumeAdding references to your resume is something you can do when you have more space available on your resume. 6 Amazing To-Do Lists To Help You Maximize Productivity

6 Amazing To-Do Lists To Help You Maximize Productivity 6 Amazing To-Do Lists To Help You Maximize Productivity Sticky notes are so last century. While some people swear by paper to-do lists, I’ve always found that they either clutter up my workspace way too much or end up getting lost completely for them to be valuable to me. But the good news is, there are better options out there.  With the proliferation of productivity apps, extensions, and software that exist today, there’s a plethora of platforms to keep track of your daily priorities. But with so many out there, the question becomes: Which one is right for you? Fortunately, this time, you can save yourself the research. We’ve created a round-up of some of the best to-do lists out there, each with their own unique features with specific types of work styles in mind. Read on below, and get ready to kick your productivity into high gear . Best for : People seeking simplicity A few years ago, after my computer broke down and I lost all of the notes I had saved to my desktop, I finally decided to embrace the cloud and download Evernote. Since then, I haven’t looked back. One thing I love about Evernote is that it can be as simple or as complex as you choose to make it - 95 percent of the time I just draft quick to-do lists using text only, but you can also include links, checklists, tables, photos, audio recordings, website grabs, and more. You can even handwrite notes if that floats your boat, and they’re still searchable to boot. The free version allows you to upload up to 60 MB of new material a month, and sync your notes across two devices, while their Evernote Plus offering ($34.99/year) allows you to upload 1 GB a month, store across all of your devices, and access customer support, among other features. If you’re feeling extra fancy, Evernote Premium  ($69.99/year) lets you upload10 GB  a month, annotate PDFs, and present notes with one click. Best For: People that need to stop and smell the flowers If you often find yourself overwhelmed by everything on your plate , Momentum is the to-do list for you. Add the free extension to your Chrome browser, and every time you open a new tab you’ll be greeted with a calming, picturesque landscape (the specific image changes each day), a personal greeting, and an inspirational quote (mine today was “ Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what they are capable of being.”).   A small to-do list in the lower right-hand corner allows you to list the individual tasks on your plate and check them off as you complete them, while a field in the center prompts you to enter what your biggest priority for the day is - helpful for those who often miss the forest for the trees. It may sound cheesy, but Momentum feels a little bit like a friend there to greet you every time you open a new tab, which both a) helps reduce any anxiety you might have around your workload and b) makes you pause before goofing off online - it’s hard to be tempted to go to Facebook when the tab you open is always reminding you of where your energy should be spent. Best For : People who are action-oriented Wunderlist has many of the same features as Evernote - the ability to see your notes on multiple devices, clip web pages, share lists with other collaborators, etc. - but it’s also a bit more action-oriented. If you find yourself often needing reminders, Wunderlist makes it easy by allowing you to assign due dates for items, alerting you with push notifications, and letting you turn emails into action items by forwarding them to the app. If you often find your colleagues and manager pinging you with reminders, this is an easy way to hold yourself accountable. The Pro version  allows for more file space, assignments, subtasks, and background images, while the Business version is designed with teams in mind. Best For: People who struggle with motivation CARROT brands itself as a talking to-do list with attitude, and with the phrase “You don’t want to make me upset,” featured prominently on their homepage, it’s clear that they’re not messing around. CARROT provides an almost game-like interface, with rewards for those that follow through on their tasks (and punishments for those who don’t). For each assignment you complete, you’ll be awarded points, ultimately allowing you to level up, and praise - but if you procrastinate, it’ll hit you with charming phrases like “My hatred for you already burns with the passion of 10,000 suns.” Be aware, though, that CARROT is more lacking in capabilities than other apps - essentially, you can only list tasks and mark them as complete. However, if you’ve got a set of simple tasks and just need a virtual assistant to light a fire under your rear, this is a good option. Price:  Free, with premium upgrades Best For: People who want bells & whistles Any.do combines many of the best features of Evernote, Carrot, Wunderlist, and iCalendar in an all-in-one package that’s sophisticated, yet simple. The free version   lets you create events, tasks, notes, and reminders in a calendar-style format, while the Premium version  (between $2.09 and $2.99 per month, depending on how many devices you plan to use it on) offers customizable themes, unlimited file sizes, recurring tasks, collaboration, and some other smart features - the coolest of which is probably their location-based reminders that are triggered once you’re in the vicinity of a certain area (think: walking into the grocery store and being reminded that you need to pick up milk). It also offers a smart virtual assistant (with a little less sass than CARROT) that can do some pretty impressive things. The demo, for example, shows the virtual assistant helping a user select which flowers to buy for their mother in a chat-based interface. Price:  Free, with premium upgrades Best For: People who need help prioritizing Not all tasks are created equal - while you may have 20 things on your to-do list, there are always going to be some that you need to pay closer attention to than others, either because a due date is approaching, there are varying levels of importance, etc. Todoist knows that, and makes it easy for those who struggle with prioritization to get their ducks in a row. In addition to allowing for the creation of lists, reminders, tasks, and more, Todoist offers four levels of color-coded prioritization tags to help you figure out what to focus on first. While the free version will provide you all of the above in a limited quantity, the Premium version  ($28.99/year) offers an increased number of projects, automatic backups, productivity tracking and charts, and more.

5 unexpected ways dreaming can improve your health

5 unexpected ways dreaming can improve your health 5 unexpected ways dreaming can improve your health Dreams can be tricky things. They may reveal your biggest aspirations - a huge success at work, the  marriage proposal  you’ve been waiting for, a visit to one of your  bucket list destinations  - or your greatest fears. They can keep you up at night or draw you so deeply into sleep that you find yourself dozing past the alarm. You may remember them in great detail or forget that they ever even happened. Beyond their mystery, dreams are associated with physical, mental, and emotional well-being in ways that might surprise you. Terry Cralle, registered nurse and clinical sleep educator and consultant for  Saatva, tells us that there are five ways in particular that dreaming can boost your overall health and quality of life.Keep reading to learn more, then cross your fingers and hope for dreams next time you’re counting sheep.1. Dreams can offer a new point of viewMost people have experienced those dreams that put them in the odd position of watching themselves from the outside. T hey can sometimes be creepy, but these out-of-body dreams may also improve your mental health by giving you a unique perspective from which to consider what’s happening IRL. A new perspective might be just what you need to create a new go-forward plan in a relationship or tricky work situation that’s been weighing you down.2. They’ll prepare you for challenges and stressful circumstancesNo one likes a nightmare, of course, but scary dreams prime your brain to more effectively manage anxiety and perceived danger. By experiencing negative emotions in your dreams, you’ll likely find yourself more ready to deal with high-stress situations in your waking hours.3. Dreaming is linked to sleeping more soundlyCralle notes that researchers have looked at dreams as “sleep guardians who protect your beauty rest” ever since the days of Freud, who was the first to propose that they prevent sleep disruption. Research shows that people who dream less frequently experience more sleep iss ues than those who are often frolicking in dreamland.4. Dreams help reinforce your memoryAccording to Cralle, dreaming has been shown to strengthen our memories and help us better absorb new information during the day. Even dreams that seem totally unrelated to a moment you’ve experienced while awake may help you process and remember information old and new. Many of us experience memory loss as we age, so in a way, dreaming can help keep us young!5. They promote a more consistently positive mood“Researchers have found that the more dreams you have in a night, the more your disposition changes,” Cralle shares. “In other words, those seemingly random dreams can actually moderate your mood, causing you to wake up cheerier and ready to take on the day.” And don’t we all need a little mood boost every once in a while? This article was originally published on Brit + Co.

Do You Have a Lack of Internal Applicants for Managerial Roles

Do You Have a  Lack of Internal Applicants  for Managerial Roles Do You Have a  Lack of Internal Applicants  for Managerial Roles If you recognize this situation, there may be an image problem or an actual problem with the middle management experience in your firm that is negatively impacting your ability to attract internal talent. A  lack of of internal talent will dent your competitive edge, as studies show that internal hires perform better, cost less, and are more profitable than external hires. If you  find that staff have a genuine fear of management in your business, you cannot afford to ignore the problem. You may be consoled by the knowledge that you are not alone in this predicament:  according to a CareerBuilder Survey,  52 percent of workers dont want to move into management and are doing just fine in their current role. This means that, at least in part, you may be caught up in a wider anti-management trend, one that potentially stems from the high-profile failures in management seen during the recent economic crisis. Nevertheless, you do need to take action to defeat this antipathy toward management â€" if it exists in your business â€" if   you are to realize the full potential of your workforce. I have identified several strategies that can help you galvanize your workforce and re-engage top  performers  with the career ladder in your business. 1. Remove the Fear of Failure Dont play Chutes and Ladders. The risk of failure is a major deterrent that prevents many employees from aiming for managerial roles. High-performing employees  can move into management positions, crash and burn quickly, and find themselves tossed out without a parachute. It doesnt have to be this way. Show workers that failed managers are not ejected from the organization unceremoniously, but are  treated with respect and given the option and support to move sideways or downwards to a role in which they can be a star again. Let staff members know theres a parachute and a soft landing if the management career isnt right for them. 2. Hire More Dissatisfied People The CareerBuilder survey mentioned above shows that workers who are satisfied with what they have tend not to shoot for the stars. Theres nothing wrong with that: its a healthy mindset and a valid pathway to inner peace, even if it isnt staunchly capitalist. However,  having too many satisfied types will harm your talent pipeline. Take a good look at the hiring process and start to swing the balance a little in favor of hiring more ambitious and dissatisfied candidates. 3. Job Sharing and Four-Day Management Roles Another big  reason why people dont want to manage is the perception that theyll need to sacrifice their work-life balance and start putting in 50-hour workweeks. Can you try a  management job-sharing program, or build three-four day part-time management options that make it unnecessary for employees to  sacrifice work-life balance when they become managers? 4. Prepare Employees  for the Transition Many workers lack the confidence or feel they lack the competence to move into managerial roles. So, you should provide managerial training and support from the outset to encourage more candidates to apply for these positions. If you adopt these strategies in whole or in part, you should be able to increase the flow and range of internal applicants for your managerial roles. Id love to hear from people who are reluctant to move into management and why that is. Id also like to hear from managers who have been able to encourage reluctant managers to move into management roles and how they achieved that!
